General CPAP Use, Cleaning, Maintanance & trouble Shooting
Q: Why is CPAP therapy important?
A: CPAP helps treat sleep-disordered breathing, which can reduce risks associated with heart failure, high blood pressure, stroke, arrhythmias, diabetes, and coronary artery disease
Q: How can I get used to CPAP therapy?
A: Use it consistently, even for naps or watching TV in bed. Stick to a regular bedtime and make it part of your nightly routine
Q: How do I clean my CPAP equipment?
A: Use warm soapy water (dish soap works well). Clean your mask, tubing, and humidifier chamber 2–3 times weekly (minimum once a week). Always use distilled water in your humidifier
Q: How often should I replace my mask, tubing, and filters?
Full face mask cushion: monthly Nasal pillows: every 2 weeks Tubing: every 3 months Filter: monthly or every 2 months depending on insurance Supplies usually come every 3 or 6 months
Q: My mouth is dry. What can I do?
A: Increase the humidity on your device. Settings range from 1 (dry) to 8 (humid) depending on model
Q: There's water in my tubing making noise — what's wrong?
A: That's condensation. Adjust humidity and tube temperature. Start with 80°F tube temp and 4 humidity level, or switch to auto-climate control
Q: My nose runs constantly with CPAP
A: This may be a temporary reflex. Ensure your humidity is high enough and consult your provider if it persists
Q: I feel claustrophobic or take the mask off in my sleep.
A: Try desensitizing by wearing it while awake (watching TV or reading), or request a mask re-fitting
Q: What if I’m sick with a cold or sinus infection?
A: Clean your equipment daily. Use OTC nasal sprays or decongestants to ease use. Avoid skipping more than a few days
